WGN TV Names Los Burritos Mexicanos As Source of Lombard E. coli Outbreak

The restaurant at the center of an E. coli outbreak  in Lombard, Illinois, that has hospitalized four victims has finally been identified by a local news station.  It is Los Burritos Mexicanos on St. Charles Road in Lombard, Illinois, according to WGN TV.

Although there has been no independent confirmation by the DuPage County Health Department that Los Burritos Mexicanos is the source of the E. coli, WGN reports that all four of the hospitalized victims ate at that restaurant, and the owners closed the restaurant on Friday at 5 pm so the local health department could conduct a thorough investigation.  There are also reports of as many as 6 other victims who have been treated by were not admitted to the hospital.  The four victims were admitted to Advocates Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, approximately 25 miles west of Chicago.

The Los Burritos Mexicanos restaurant currently has a hand written sign on the front door telling would-be patrons that its other location on North Avenue remains open.

Local health officials have not yet released their inspection report, and are not yet naming Los Burritos Mexicanos, which is standard practice.  “Until the trace-back investigation is concluded,” says Ron Simon, a national food poisoning lawyer who has represented thousands of victims of food poisoning, “the health department will not name the source of the outbreak.  This is done in part to prevent any damage to the reputation of an innocent restaurant, but also to encourage the cooperation of a restaurant suspected of being the source of an outbreak.   I expect the local and state officials to make an announcement soon, but until then, it is important that anyone who ate at this restaurant and got sick to come forward to help health officials determine the exact source of the E. coli.”
